Round 1 SUPERS MASTERS
Sunday 6th April
SuncoastV Vs Wilston Grange SuncoastV Vs Wilston Grange 10.19 79 3.3 21 15.15 105 2.5 17
Venue:
Wilston Grange The boys were a little slow off the mark for the season opener and trailed W/G at quarter time. The second term saw Suncoast begin to dominate possession but their kicking let them down and at the main break it was SuncoastV 14 points up (3-14 to 3-0). Possessions came easy for SuncoastV in the second half with a greater accuracy in front of goal and a greater level of fitness from key players.
Goals:Rabbs, Tony Vag, PJ, Penny, Tas SuncoastV Masters started where they left off last year, dominating the play accross the ground leading from start to finish. A solid performance from contributers including Tails, Wayne and ensured that the forward line was well serviced and able to kick goals. With a number of new-comers in the side all performing well for their first game back, it will be difficult for a number of players to maintain their positions.
Goals: Marty, Tas,
Round 2 SUPERS MASTERS
Sunday 20th April
SuncoastV Vs Jindalee SuncoastV Vs Jindalee 16.11 107 4.2 26 7.4 46 2.4 16
Venue:
Fisherman's RdThe sun may have been out for the start of the game but the ground told the story - it was going to be a wet weather footy game. A pity no one told the SuncoastV. Many of the marks taken overhead belied the conditions. Numerous ventures into the forward fifty came from players running in two’s and three’s from the half–back line. SuncoastV played as a team with welcome contributions from Dupee and Chowy in their first game of the 2008 season. Honourable mention goes to PJ, Jamie, Richie C, Ritchie H, Crackers and “back-pocket” Belly who will look forward to forward-line call-up in future matches after his 2 goal contribution.
Goals: Crackers 2, Botters 2, Dupee 2, Belly 2, Richie C,This was a wet weather slog. Conditions under foot almost required the use of flippers not stops. Incursions into the forward line were slow going and generally hard fought. The ball proved hard to hold and frequently went to ground where the smaller players made the most of their opportunities. It was the team spirit and support from all that ensured SuncoastV led from start to finish. Honourable mention goes to Pip, Monker, Woody, Darren and Wilkes.
Goals: Darren 2, Marty, Pip, Monker,
BOG (Best OFF Ground) - Milesy for the delicious burgers that could be smelt accross the grounds throughout the games. That must be worth a couple of votes!
Round 3 SUPERS MASTERS
Sunday 4th May
SuncoastV Vs Springwood SuncoastV Vs Springwood 16.02 98 7.7 49 9.10 64 8.5 53
Venue:
Springwood AFCThe first quarter follies continued again this week as the SuncoastV attempted to warm up the engine and put the football machine into gear, taking a 4point lead into the 1st break (Deano dribbled his kick at goal though the two big sticks for his first major). The second term saw a domination of possession and good ball movement across the half-back line with Big Bad Bustling Botters making his presence felt in the forward fifty, kicking 3 majors on the end of some mesmerizing pieces of play.
The 3rd term saw the SuncoastV outscored as they began to reflect on their first-half achievements, but again another inspiring piece of rhetoric by Nipper at the final break spurred them on to add another 5 goals in the final term to seal victory. PJ was outstanding on the wing commencing numerous forays into the forward fifty with JP on the opposite wing exhibiting some tantalizing skills for a 10-game veteran of the sport.
Solid contributions made by Dickers, Vaggs, Chowy, Wilkes and Rabbs. Outstanding efforts made by Wayno, Deano, Chas, Moncs and a number of other guys for doubling up and playing 2 games. Rabbs sustained a cut to the head.
Goals: Botters 3, Dupee 3; Wilkes 2, Dickers 2, Chowy 2, Singles to PJ, Deano, M.Vag & EddieA slow start was made by the SuncoastV Masters with the side being outscored by the Springwood Panthers three goals to one at the end of the 1st term. The game was very stop-start in nature with turnovers aplenty due to skill errors and poor judgements made by players on both sides. This style of play continued well into the 2nd quarter with poor use of the ball and numerous opportunities approaching the goals squandered.
A dressing down by Nipper at the half time juncture and the injection of Tim Moncur onto the ball in the second half appeared to stop the rot and sparked a mini-revival with a flurry of 5 goals, allowing SuncoastV to take the lead for the first time in the match. The final term was neck and neck with the game in the balance, both sides kicking 2 majors. SuncoastV hung on for a 11point victory.
Solid performances were made by Thatch, Moncs, Pip and Evil. Footy is back after his marathon efforts and was seen running all over the place.
Dicko is believed to be nursing a broken wrist after a fracas in the second half and is expected to miss the next few rounds (need to use the left hand now Dicko!).
Goals: Evil 3, Woody 2, Singles to Pip, Tas, Wilkes & Munro
Round 4 SUPERS MASTERS
Sunday 18th May
SuncoastV Vs Centrals SuncoastV Vs Centrals 14.12 96 4.4 28 16.08 104 2.2 14
Venue: Aspley
Football ClubIt started out a lovely day for football – 20deg.C with plenty of sun. Oooops forgot to mention the 35-40knott winds. This made the game a very scrambley affair. Richie C (returning to the fold as captain after a forced absence) lost the toss but oversaw a valiant first-half which saw centrals restricted to only one point while SuncoastV amassed 6goals 9 behinds. The second half saw SuncoastV ease up and give centrals a sniff. The major portion of the play still saw SuncoastV dominate possession however this was not reflected on the scoreboard.
Belly (aka Mr Utility – formerly known as Back-pocket Belly) kicked 2 goals and is putting the likes of Botters (the Body aka the Dung Beetle) under pressure to maintain the coveted gun forward position. Big Jas starred with a reverse falcon down forward late in the second Qtr (what he was doing near goals playing back pocket no-one knows – the wind must have blown him down there) and Erinese finished a lousy 5th in race 5 and looks set to end up at the glue factory after that lack-luster performance.
On a troubling note, Goodsey has injured his AC-joint and may find it hard to issue tickets in his present state. All the best for a quick recovery (ask Dicko for pointers about using your left hand).
Goals: PJ 3, Vaggy (aka Preying Mantis) 2, Belly 2, Dung Beetle 2, with singles to Chowy, Rabbs, Rod G., Goodsey, and Fang.Everyone on the bus knew Wayno was up for a big game. Filling in amicably for Milesy (netball commitments – apparently he looks great in a skirt) as driver, he was practicing the maneuvers on the highway that would see him leave the opposition in his wake, on one of his numerous exits from the backline. It was a blustery affair with the wind testing the skills of even the best footballers that the Sunshine Coast has to offer.
SuncoastV piled on 8 goals to Centrals 2 in the first half of hostilities, with solid contributions being made all over the ground. The final half saw the Sunny coast pile on another 8 unanswered goals to steal a comfortable victory.
The Masters squad played as a team and it was difficult to single out any individual for praise above the rest – but we’ll give it a go. Micky D leads the body count stats for the day, Wayno had 15, YES 15 bounces, Kel had a fantastic 1st game back and Evil was all over the place like a mad woman’s ____ (i’ll let you fill in the blanks here). A solid performance by all.
Goals: Marty 4, Wilkes 3, Pip 2, Singles to Woody, Evil, Dwayno, Chaz, Darren, Footy and Timmens.
Round 5 SUPERS MASTERS
Sunday 1st June
SuncoastV Vs Bayside Bombers BYE 08.03 51 12.16 88
Venue:
Alexandra HillsI have been rendered speechless. SuncoastV Supers have lodged their first loss in about 18months. Was this the lost we had to have? Time will tell with ongoing speculation about the viability of two SuncoastV teams.
The game started well, a flurry of 3 goals with the wind in the first quarter kept the Bombers to a paltry 4 behinds. Though problems began to arise early, with Chowie retiring to the forward line (leg problems) and Monka requiring 2 rolls of tape and lots of attention from Uppo to return onto the ground. The second term saw SuncoastV kick 2 majors into the wind as Bayside piled on 4 goals 5 to take a narrow 3 point lead into the half time break.
The premiership quarter proved difficult as another player went down with injury concerns (Botters) and unable to take any further part in the game, reducing the playing numbers to a 16-a-side. The forward line was bursting with injuries and still managed to contribute 2 goals for the term. Unfortunately this was not enough to stem the flow of goals at the other end, as Bayside built on a 16point lead at 3-quarter time to finish 37 point victors.
Let’s make no excuses; SuncoastV was beaten by the better team on the day. Everyone in a navy-blue jumper played with passion, courage and most importantly commitment. In the end our numbers let us down, with a starting side of 17 – it was always going to be touch and go – long odds (not unlike those on Erinese if you follow my meaning). I must say it was certainly a sobering feeling rocking up to the Blue Bar without a rendition of “The Boys from the Sunshine Coast”. Not something those on the trip would like to experience in the near future. Nor those in the bar who left early I daresay!
Goals: Chowie 2, with singles to Duane, Botters, Monka, Chaz et al.
Carnival (Rnd 6) SUPERS MASTERS
Sunday 15th June
SuncoastV Vs Coolangatta SuncoastV Vs Gold Coast 15.14 104 05.07 37 06.09 45 04.12 36
Venue: Sandgate AFC Bolstered with the return of a number of players, the Supers side once again demonstrated why they are the team to beat in the competition. Up against Coolangatta, a very tall side, actually they made us look vertically challenged, must be the water down there (or lack of it).
Delivery into the forward line was initially sporadic with the wind playing a major role in the game. The small ground almost negated the need for a forward line when kicking with the wind as 4 of SuncoastV’s 6 goals for the first quarter were kicked from the edge of the square. A 1 goal 7 contribution in the second term say scores at half time SuncoastV 7-7 to C’gatta 3-5.
A spectacular aerial grab by Ritchie H in the third quarter really revved up the side and a goal resulted. It was a solid effort by all with some of the best work done by Chowie on the sidelines, filling the team manager role to perfection.
Goals: 4 Crackers; 3 Eddie; 2 Barrett, Dupee; 1 Wilkes, Belly, Dickers, Rod and almost 1 to Fids (someone got a little excited on the scoresheet). It is always billed as the grudge match of the year. The two teams, from opposite ends of the coast, playing it out for the bragging rights for the next 12 months. The wind was still a contributing factor early in the game with SuncoastV kicking a respectable 1 goal 3 into the wind while Goldie sprayed 1 goal 8 (Eddie’s marvellous job goal umpiring did not adversely affect the score and seemed to entertain the crowd and police that were congregating).
The second quarter saw both teams kept to only 2 scoring shots a piece, however SuncoastV had the greater accuracy with halftime scores showing SuncoastV 3-3 leading Goldie 1-10 and Tas only causing minor frustration to an innocent Sandgate advertising panel (no charges were laid).
By the third term the wind no longer worried either side, however the large Sandgate ground was a clear indicator of which team had the superior fitness – the police apprehending the juveniles in the old clubhouse closely followed by Eddie’s performance behind the goals! In the end a hard slog by both teams with SuncoastV adding 3 goals to their half-time tally to beat the Gold Coast by 9 points.
Goals: 2 Darren; 1 Ronnie, Duane, Evil & Tas.
Round 7 SUPERS MASTERS
Sunday 29th June
SuncoastV Vs Wilston Grange SuncoastV Vs Wilston Grange 23.09 147 03.02 20 07.14 56 04.04 28
Venue: Fisherman's Road The score line says it all. The supers dominated the ball out of the middle as the boys in the engine room fired. Duey put on a clinical display, running and delivering the ball into the forward line with deadly accuracy (on more occasions than Marty’s heard one eyed jokes). The skill ability of all players made being a forward a pleasure… even making old steam trains like Bodders look like Fevola, plus a hundred kilos or so!
The backline didn’t put a foot wrong, except for wanting to swap with the forwards at half time… just to get a touch! Ritchie C didn’t let the peanut gallery down, taking a great contested mark basically right in front, only to narrowly miss the bloke on the mark because the ball headed through for a point! This rates a close second to Duane Pipes miss at Sandgate, where he was on the line right in front after a 50m penalty and was heard saying whilst walking to take his kick.. “well at least I won’t miss from here… only to hit the post”. Ha there is a god!
On a sad note the game finished 3 minutes into the last quarter as one of the Grange boys had to be taken away by Ambulance as he collapsed having broken two ribs in the previous game. Apparently he is now OK, but his missus has retired him from footy! A dire warning to us all……..If you get injured, no matter how bad don’t let yer missus know!? Botters did breath a sigh of relief though, as how the hell could he have put up with Richie scoring more than him, as both would have played a half each at Full Forward... Botters we will never know, fate came to your rescue!Goals: Crackers 5, T. Vagg 4, Botters 4, M. Vagg 3, Duey 3, Richie C 2.1, Big Brett & Belly 1
The boys made this one look like hard work for the first three quarters with inaccurate kicking for goal! Maybe they missed Wilkes on the half forward line as he spent most of the game on the side line nursing an ankle injury. Due to early inaccuracy the backline had to repel many counter attacks, however by the last quarter fitness prevailed and the (old) boys kicked clear to win comfortably.
Solid performances were made by Chaz, Andy Timms, Duane Pipes, Richie R & Old father time (Thatch).Goals: Marty 2 goals 5 points*, Taz 2, Pip, Footy and Darren with singles.
Next game is away at Jindalee on the 13/7/08….Let’s make this a trip to remember, it’s our third last for the season!
Round 8 SUPERS MASTERS
Sunday 13th July
SuncoastV Vs Jindalee SuncoastV Vs Jindalee 26.11 167 04.02 26 16.09 105 02.06 18
Venue: Jindalee With Dickers pulling out of the line-up quicker than Yana could get out of the Olympics squad, we knew we had a game on our hands. The Suncoast Supers Squad had to pull out an Erinese style performance if it was going to have any chance of a victory.
Probably the most confident start to a game for the 2008 season, the SunCoast V Supers put on 5-4 to Jindalees 2-0 in the first quarter. Good delivery into the forward line ensured that the goals kept coming in the second with another seven goals to end the half with 12-6 to 3-1.
The second half saw the SunCoast Supers willing to run all over the ground to back each other up and win the ball. Mark Vagg was a dominating force across the half-back line and Fidds demonstrated his own presence in the centre. Resting Barrett in the forward pocket proved a master stroke with Jindalee having no answers.
Big Deano certainly rates a mention for his antics in front of goal. After calling what many thought (including both the umpires) was a certain SunCoast goal a behind, he took possession from the kick-out and sends the ball flying over the full-backs head for a six pointer. He will do just about anything to get his name on the score sheet.
Back-pocket Belly was the latest to suffer the “yips” this week after earning a mark from 5 metres out directly in front of goal. Richie C was quick to remind Belly of his own experiences from this position in the last game. It was a promising approach and Belly (in an attempt to emulate Richie’s last foray up forward) sent the ball sailing directly through the posts for a minor score. Richie was jubilant and was quick to exclaim that there was a god, though this didn’t stop Belly from contributing 2 more goals to the scorers’ card.
The slippery zucchini was presented to virgin bus tripper Cam but the presenters (Jamie & Fingers) were unavailable to present it, and the haemorrhoid boys (aka Nipper & Wilke) kept all travellers entertained on the bus trip home with their seat-swapping antics.Goals: Barret 7, Dion 5, T.Vagg 3, Belly 2, Stewie 2, PJ 2, with singles to Tas, Chowie, Botters & D.Horizon.
It was an early start to the day with the bus departing the Sports Bars at 7am. Uppo had the strapping kit onboard ready to prep the warriors for the upcoming battle. Captain Miles saw fit to give the team a close look at the ground on our arrival. Many just expected him to do his best impersonation of Tony Greig’s pitch report. That wasn’t to be the case. Milesy, when the team said put the key into the pitch, they meant for you to remove it from the ignition first!
A fantastic effort by the back line ensured that Jindalee could only contribute minor scores for the second half and their delivery into the forward line was just beautiful to watch. Wayne put on another Manassa-esque performance, collecting another 30 bounces and a screamer by Milesy in the second half topped off a solid game by the boys, cruising to an 87point victory. A solid performance was also recorded by many of the boys on the bus trip home. Well done!
The ball proved slippery in the dewy conditions and the Masters start was slow to get rolling (might have been quicker if they had stayed on the bus) with Jindalee taking an early lead at the end of the first break 2-1 to 1-2. The SunCoastV had plenty of possession but their disposal let them down, turning over the ball at the most inopportune times. The quarter time pep talk and discussions from the brains trust did the trick and the SunCoast boys scored four unanswered goals to lead Jindalee 5-4 to 2-4 at half time.Goals: Marty 3, Tas 3, Wilkes 2, Wayne 2, Woody 2, with singles to Foote, Darren, Pipes, & Russ.
Round 9 SUPERS MASTERS
Sunday 27th July
SuncoastV Vs Springwood SuncoastV Vs Springwood 18.13 121 04.03 27 09.08 62 02.04 16
Venue: Fisherman's Road Designated a slow track by the stewards, the conditions better suited the likes of Erinesse, rather than a football team. Botters was a late inclusion in the side after a big night out, he quickly stamped his mark on the game, making a desperate lunge for the ball before smothering it, digging a drainage furrow and busting his lip. This helped the Suncoast side post 6-6 to Springwoods 1-1 for the term.
Goodsey and Akka made a welcome return top the playing ranks after injury and both made solid contributions. Dickers appeared to be suffering a little jetlag (from his Hawaii experience) in the first half but started linking well with Cam and PJ (after the dummy spit) making many incursions into the forward line, contributing to the 61 point lead at half time.
With such a commanding lead, Nipper again rotated forwards and backs in the second half, though this did not stop the onslaught as a further 8 goals 4 were added. With Richie C on the ball and Rabbs new size 9 white boots, Springwood didn’t stand a chance! We just hope Rabbs can get them clean.Goals: Dupee 5, Botters 4, T.Vagg, D.Goodall 2, with singles to Rabbs, Spencer, Monka, Chowie and Akka.
It was a hard slog – a lot of dew on the ground combined with the already dead conditions after a weeks worth of rain. Concerns still surround Wilkes as he ruled himself out of the game and was seen riding the exercise bike early in the first term. Is he carrying an injury?
Goals: Taz 3, Ritchie 2, with singles to Monka, Garth, Wayne and Woody
It was a steady start with Suncoast working hard to post 3 goals 1 to Springwood’s solitary goal in the first term. Supply then appeared to dry up as the Suncoast were only able to add 3 behinds in the second term to lead by 10 points at the main break.
It was not a forwards day as the delivery into the forward line was intermittent and when it did come, the wet ball proved difficult to direct and take cleanly. Footy played a tenacious game and appeared very comfortable on his wing, leading the charge into the forward line on numerous occasions.
Another noteworthy event was seeing the Shrek (Richie C) pull on the whites to help officiate as the central umpire in his first game. Well done! A big premiership quarter saw Suncoast kick clear to post a 46 point victory.
Round 10 SUPERS MASTERS
Sunday 10th August
SuncoastV Vs Centrals SuncoastV Vs Centrals 19.18 132 05.04 34 13.19 97 02.05 17
Venue: Fisherman's Road A tussle from the outset, the Centrals turned up ready to give a good showing against the slightly sleepy Suncoast Supers Squad. The Centrals were the first to score but that is where it ended on the score board. However their physical presence ensured that the Suncoast Supers had to work hard for their six-goal lead at half time.
At the half-time huddle Botters was left with specific instructions from Nipper to “weave his magic” in the final half and to “lead to the fat side” when he came out from Full-Forward. Unfortunately a few of our on-ballers and Botters himself became confused as to which was the fat side, allowing the likes of the Dans, Fidds and Chowie to get onto the scoresheet.
A number of players experienced some solid conditioning in preparation for the Darwin Carnival. A memorable event was Vaggy selling Fidds into trouble (on more than one occasion) with a handball that left Fidds testing the ground hardness. And who could forget the “Clash of the Titans” as Dickers and Big Jas bounced off one another late in the forth quarter.
A solid 98 point win to the sunshine coast.
Goals: Barra 4, T.Vagg 3, Monka, Botters, Chowie 2, and singles to Fidds, Rabs, Dan1, Dan2 & Duey.Thank god for the dry weather, with the ground freshly mown and looking a picture it beckoned for some great skilled footy! As often the case has been this season, the masters got off to a slow and shaky start, with the ball being rebounded from backline to backline without a lot of scoring. The fluky winds didn’t help matters when a shot on goal did eventuate. As is always the trend for this season, the old boys settled into the sort of footy that has seen them dominate the Masters comp.
Solid efforts were made by Richy Rayburn, Duanne Pipes, and Tails. It was also good to see Dicko back on track after time out with a wrist injury, and the return of the amazing Rod Wilkie after injury and a bender of a reconnaissance trip to Darwin with Nipper. Apparently the boys give it the thumbs up for the National Masters carnival up there, the beer is cold up there and tastes even better if you can scam it for free!
The Masters have a few weeks off now with a bye, but are encouraged to join the supers on their grudge trip back to Redlands, to show the Bombers how to play football!
Goals: Unfortunately this data is not available.
Round 11 SUPERS MASTERS
Sunday 24th August
SuncoastV Vs Bayside Bombers BYE 27.14 176 1.1 7
Venue: Alex Hills What a game! Suncoast posted its highest score of the season in overcoming its hoodoo side for 2008, the Bayside Bombers (see match report Round 5). It was probably the side’s most confident start to a game, posting a massive 8 goals 4 in the first quarter while keeping the opposition scoreless. This was done again in the second quarter to set up a half-time lead of 103 points with the bombers still scoreless at the half-time juncture.
At the big break Nipper applied some positional changes to the side, and rotated a number of key positions. However this did not affect the supply of quality ball into the forward line and the Suncoast Supers were able to stretch their lead to 169 points by games end.
Solid performances were displayed by all participants, including the Bombers. In the third it appeared that they were going to dummy-spit, until Botters came to the rescue and let the Bombers through to score a solitary goal (Botters securing his position up forward in the process).
Richie C was finding his game up forward frustrating and in the last quarter was sent from the field for using language that was deemed too harsh, even when commenting on his own abilities. Not to worry though as he was asked at the end of the game to apologise to himself for the outburst (apparently he accepted his own apology).
A full and detailed match report will be published in the August newsletter - stay tuned.Goals: Milesy (Dion) 8, Barret 6, Richie H. 3, Tails 2, with single to Monka, Rod, Botters, Cam, Pipes, Vaggy, Chowie, Duey and Richie C.
Richie working up another fantastic article for the SuncoastV website (top) and Botters with that talked about goal (bottom).
