  • Round 3 Match

       03 May, 2009

Round 3 Masters Score CardThe absence of some key players and the lack of height against a taller outfit made for a hard fought first half. Numbers did pose a problem as some had to play up to ensure sufficient bench players. Pipes was inspirational as he led from the front with Chaz and Chriso making their presence known all over the ground. A shocking head clash saw pipes requiring medical attention and an equally shocking head bandage.

The game was almost square as it entered the final quarter and Suncoast were in with a sniff. An indiscretion in the final term between Taz and one of the paid officials proved to be costly with Taz being sent from the field without replacement. Morningside ran away with the game from this point and finished comfortable winners. Taz was awarded the umpire’s shirt for the return trip. Check out more snaps in the Photo Gallery.

The lessons learnt by Suncoast at the end of last season were still fresh in everyone’s minds. Stories surrounding recruited players and the supply of QAFL umpires for games left players on both sides unsure of what to expect. For all of this hype and talk surrounding this game, it did not live up to expectations.

The supply of ball from the centre of the ground was led by Barra and well supported by a bevy of rotating on-ballers. The forwards were dominant as the scoreboard clearly indicates. Not to be outshone was the efforts by the backline, allowing only 3 goals to be scored against them. The centre line frequently returned to the backline to assist and it was from here that probing raids were instigated into the forward line with increasing success. An easy win in the end for Suncoast!.

  • Wayno and Ronnie - two Pies in a pod!

    April Clanger of the Month

       13 May, 2009

Richie was rescued from the Clanger of the Month by some pretty amazing last minute work by Ronnie and Wayno (the Collingwood Co-op). After the Pies big win on Friday, this pair were pumped for a game themselves. They got up really early to drive to the game on Sunday and had time to spare for a quick coffee. Ronnie grabbed some gear out of the back of the car and the coffee definitely hit the spot.

When they returned to the car, they realised that the keys were missing. It appears that they were left in the boot of the car. A call to the RACQ, a membership joining fee and 30mins later they were on the road again. Congratulations to Ronnie and his assistant Wayno on the Clanger of the Month!

    Round 4 Match

       17 May, 2009

It was another slow start to the match for the Masters. Missed targets, poor disposal and indirect avenues towards goal by Suncoast allowed Springwood to stay in the match. Efforts to gee-up the side were falling on deaf ears as the Supers Squad decided to take up a little coaching of their own from the sideline.

Finally the wake-up call came early in the final quarter, everything just clicked and the squad came together. They played like the team of old, backing each other up, helping each other out along the defensive line and mounting attacks on the goals with increasing success. Suncoast kept Springwood goal-less in the final term with solid contributions made by Wilkes, Chaz, Thatch, Richie R. and Pipes. Goals were shared around the squad with 9 separate goal kickers cementing a handy win.

Round 4 Supers Score CardIn the Supers game, Springwood started with a depleted squad so the Sunshine Coast gave them a couple of their crack defenders (Big Jas and Chrissy T.). This did not slow down a solid 7-goal first term by six different goal kickers. The engine room was firing and the forwards were getting an endless supply of ball from the likes of Barra, Merlo, Camo and Chriso.

By the start of the third term, attrition had reduced Springwood's numbers again so more players came across, ensuring the game was still a contest and not just a walk in the park for the Sunny Coast side. A 9-goal haul by Duey , 3 for Botters and Jacko and a bundle of goal kickers contributed to the 137 point victory. Check out all the action in the photo gallery.

    Round 5 Match

       31 May, 2009

After winning the toss and letting Redcliffe kick with the 4-goal breeze, the Masters squad did a fantastic job keeping the opposition to a solitary goal in the first quarter. Poor use of the ball in strong winds restricted Suncoast from posting a bigger score in the first half with many pulled and stray kicks.

Ronnie suffered a Technical Knock Out in the third quarter and after an examination and a battery of tests run by the Suncoast medical team, was pronounced as normal as could be expected for a Magpies supporter. Apparently the knock has returned his 20-20 vision and has knocked some sense into him – he’s thinking of barracking for Richmond!

The heavens opened in the last quarter as did the goals for the sunshine coast as they posted four goals to one to clinch a 46point victory. Pipes overcame recent concussions to have another good game along with valuable contributions from Taz, Chaz, Woody, Tails, Richie and Col (back for his fist game this season). Goals: Woody 5; Footy 2; Pipes, Monka and Col 1.

The weather was good for footy for the Supers but the footy was by no means good. The rain in the last term of the Masters game made for a slippery and heavy surface in very still conditions. The Bombers were short so we again leant them players to even up the match. Coach Botters selected our best in-form player, Richie C, freshly returned from a 6-day all you can eat buffet bender at Heron Island.

It was a lack-lustre start to the game with many content on chasing the easy ball and not committing to the contest. PJ made some solid contributions on the wing and was seen all over the place like a mad woman’s shit – apparently a common affliction amongst rehabilitation workers. He had as many inside defensive 50’s as he did inside attacking 50’s.

The wind picked up in second half and did contribute to inaccuracy around goal, though credit to Bayside for continuing to make the sunshine coast work for the ball. Cam played a good game against Tatey who was by far their BOG. Injuries to Suncoast included Paul and Nixy with hamstring twinges and Duey who was still recovering from a big Saturday night on the town.

Some highlights included the barrel launched by T.Vagg after being encouraged by the Masters populating the bar and seeing Matso return to some true form with the return of the sublime Tasmanian-like weather – he was in his element! Goals: PJ 4; Chriso, Barra, T Vagg, Shannon & Duey 2; Stu & Richie C 1.

A big thank you to all who were running around behind the scenes and helping First Mate Miles with the BBQ, raffles, water runners, umpiring and coaching. Not many sleeps now until Captain Rayner returns from active duty (drinking) in the Gulf, The Gulf of Carpentaria that is!
