Cairns Carnival Wrap
14 October, 2009
The boys are having a whale of a time in Cairns! Winning many of the games, taking away all the raffle prizes, catching all the fish and collecting beads and numerous other items of interest. Chrisso thanks for the shot of Richie sunbaking! Now onto the serious stuff.
Sunshine Coast V sent it’s largest contingent ever to Cairns to play for Queensland in the National Masters Carnival and they did their state and their club proud!

The supers (35-40’s) started off on a difficult mission playing their first game at 8.40pm on the day of arrival. They were jumped at the start with WA kicking a couple of quick goals, this was enough to see WA through the match and take out a 14pt win, however the boys rallied and got within a point late in the 3rd qtr in what proved to be the most torrid and spectacular encounter of the carnival. This was to be their undoing in their quest for winning the carnival medal, as even though beating Victoria Metro and Tasmania by 4 goals apiece in the next two matches, Vic Metro thrashed Tas in their clash which saw Vic win the coveted medal with a two goal gap to Qld. So close yet so far! Chris Barret our coach won the Best & Fairest award and named in the All Australian team. (Richie Coward kicked a super goal, worth 12pts in the last qtr against Tas. We won the game by 20pts!)

The Masters (40-45’s) had some tough games as well but showed strength and determination to win all three games, especially their last game. This was a tough clash against the Taswegians and saw them triumph by a point and win the overall medal.

The Seniors (45-50’s) were valiant in their carnival but could not breech the gap with Victoria. This team was bolstered by Rod Wilkie playing the whole carnival as ruckman and won Best & Fairest and named in the All Australian team for his fantastic effort.

The Super Seniors (50-55’s) The team Marty was to play in, again showed great fight but SA was to be the team of the carnival this year.
