Backyard Blitz goes off without a Hitch
10 February, 2010It was great to see the club come together and help one of their own in her time of need. Deidre (better known as Min) has supported and followed our club and her late husband Marty, more often than not from behind the scenes, since he took over the reins of the Sunshine Coast Super Rules many moons ago.
Marty was always busy organising the Supers and Masters Footy, which left him with very little time for the home renovations in the off season. So with his unexpected passing, many of his and Min’s footy friends from the broader sunshine coast AFL community came up with a plan to lend a hand.
Min was treated to a weekend with the girls, while back at her place the team went to work transforming the gardens and her bedroom in secret. We called on plumbers, painters, signwriters, accountants, teachers, arborists, chippies, leccy’s, tilers and office johnnies to lend a hand.
A number of businesses also chipped in to help, a big thankyou for all of your assistance. Check out the Suncoast Daily article and photos in the gallery.

Pre Season Carnival with Thirds an Eye OpenerThe Sunshine Coast Rayners first hit-out of the season saw them come up against some third-division sides in conditions that would have been more at home in Melbourne. Many of the players resembled black & white minstrels with the mud and superlatives flying everywhere.
Game 1 saw Suncoast’s first game of the season against Bribie Island, who bolted out of the blocks to a first half lead. Suncoast woke up in the second half and with a strong wind shut down Bribie’s route to goal while posting sufficient goals of their own, to post a 9 point victory.
Game 2 started in heavy rain against the 2008 & 2009 premiers Nambour, who got the jump on the boys early in the first half. The sunshine coast pegged it back early in the second half. Behind by a solitary point when the siren sounded, a freakish free kick saw Nambour kick clear by 7points.
Game 3 and Suncoast was up against a depleted Noosa Tigers outfit, sporting a number of young rookies and some ring-ins to fill in the numbers. Undermanned, Noosa were no match for a game-hardened Suncoast side, who won by a comfortable 25 points.
Finishing second in our group and third overall for the day, the Suncoast squad can hold its head high. Lookout the teams in 2011 – us old boys mean business!

Round 1 Success for Suncoast Rayners
28 March, 2010A rain cloud appeared permanently parked over the ground as bouts of sun and heavy rain plagued the Masters game. This made conditions variable and players needed to play a wet weather game as the ball became as slippery as soap. This did not stop the Suncoast side putting on 3 goals 2 in the first half to Granges 4 points.
Paul Mac played an inspirational game and seemed to be in every contest all over the ground. Willow in his first game was an eye-opener around the half-back flank, repelling numerous Grange attacks and in turn setting up attacking raids of his own.
A slightly drier second half saw Grange get back into the game with four goals before being shut down by a resurging Suncoast side to post another 5 goals to win by 31 points. Solid contributions were made by Thatch, Chrisso and Captain Crunch.
Goals: 2 Chrisso; 1 Wilkie, Ronnie, Pip, Rocket, Evil & Pipes.

The clouds seemed to part for the Supers game and the sun was blazing, making conditions hot and humid. After a rousing speech from Footy on the bus and Nipper prior to the start of the game, the boys were chaffing at the bit to make a positive start. This they did well, posting an 11 goal first half to lead Grange by 52 points at the main break.
With the absence of a number of key players, the Supers showed that they have the depth of talent to produce results comparable to the team at its full strength. The supply of ball from the centre was at its best and the depleted backline did a fantastic job of repelling attacks (Mad-dog’s tackling was superb) with many goal scoring opportunities started from the solid defence.
A diminishing bench in the final half and a key forward line change which saw the Dugong and a laconic Wilkie moved, was evidenced on the scoreboard. The Suncoast cruised to a 106 point victory. Pricey’s first sober game was a revelation for many as was the contributions from first gamers Phil, Gatto and Reidy.
Goals: 6 Shannon; 4 Richie Rayburn; 3 Reidy; 2 Gatto; 1 Barra, Deano, Leeroy, Wayno & Dugong.
