  • Round 7 Highlights

        11 July, 2010

A reverse round saw the Supers line up for the early game to take on Souths. They were initially slow out of the blocks with many shots up front going wide of the mark and earning minor scores. This kept Souths in the game through until half time as they mounted fewer but successful attacks on goal. A head clash saw PJ pull on the rubber gloves to attend to Kingy (when he saw the gloves he was a little jumpy).

Rayners defence tightened up and fitness came to the fore in the third term as Souths were kept scoreless, with the Rayners forward line finding goals. Defence from Chowie, Rabbs and Brandy was superb with great run provided from the likes of Chrisso, Richie Raeburn, Cam and Merlo.

The final term saw the introduction of a potent forward line with Botters at centre-half forward delivering precision passes on the left and right feet, setting up shots on goal for the Rayners. Solid performances from Dickers, Barra, Brandy, Camo, Merlo and Rabbs (not PJ) in the number-1 guernsey.

A big thankyou to PJ for performing the team manager & strapper duties while he recovers from the injury to his calf. Was it 3 or 4 sea lice that mauled you PJ? Thanks also to Nippa and Wimple in helping the boys out!
Goals: 5 Barra; 3 Rabbs; 2 T-Vagg; Singles to M-Vagg, Camo, Reedie, Merlo & Gaddo

The later start appeared to suit the Masters team as they piled on four unanswered goals in the first quarter to take control of the match. A big grab and attempted check-side from Macca was a highlight of the first half as the Rayners took a 14-point lead into the main break.

Both Willow and Captain Crunch were mercurial across the back line and Deano made his presence felt in the ruck, finding time to slot himself another major – well done Houston! Nigga was brilliant in getting the hard ball and was supported well by the likes of Tails, Scotty (The Doctor), Chrisso and Merlo.

Goals: 2 Wayno, Dasher; Singles to Deano, Pip, Macca, Nigga, Ronnie, Wilkes and Chrisso

  • Matso's BIG 6-0!

        11 July, 2010

The wins from earlier in the day led into the 60th birthday celebrations for club legend Mick Matson. With a band playing plenty of food including roasts and free flowing beverages, it was a wish come true for Matso. The boys also chipped in and presented him with a digital flat-screen tele to mark the event which also saw Micky catch up with some of his relatives from the little island off the southern tip of Australia - Tassie! (this didn't stop Milesy telling them his latest Tassie Joke - Did you hear about the games tha Hawthorn play in tassie making big losses? All the crowd are able to get in on one family pass!)
    Milesy!!!

A fair roll up for a cold snap in the weather at training this week. After the poor goal kicking on the weekend, time was spent kicking them at training. Speculation over match times for the clash with Wilston Grange and Greg will hopefully sort this out by weeks end. The Social Committee released its Events Calendar for the year to much cheering and fanfare from Footy, who also won the raffle for the evening.

More than sixty players rolled up for training last night ensuring a good roll-up for this weekends clash against Wilston Grange. Chowie turned up the heat once again with a warming little Laksa to further cement his position as a real contender for Master Chef in 2010. Richie reminded all of the upcoming functions (including the end of season trip to the G.C.) and Barra was the lucky winner of the raffle.

  • Round 8 Highlights

        25 July, 2010

After some miserable weather leading up to the match, the rain stayed away and the ground held up well for the commencement of play at the later start time of 12pm. With the added moisture on the playing surface, the ball was seen to bounce in an unusual fashion on many occasions. Wilston Grange arrived ready to play and matched it with the Rayners for the first term taking a 1point lead into the first break.

With Masters Coach Grant Foot on the field, he deputised Eddie Whiteside to make the changes in his stead. Eddies first change was to see Kel moved into the forward line with immediate success, kicking 3 goals to help the Rayners post 7 unanswered goals in the second term.

Solid work in the ruck for the first three quarters saw Wilkes rewarded with some time at Full Forward. The usual suspects of Tails, Chrisso and Nig were prevelant whenever the loose ball hit the ground contributing to some brilliant passages of play (including Willow's "don't argue" in the last quarter). Solid contributions also made by Ronnie, Munchy and Flt. Stwd Col helping the Masters fly away with a 57 point victory.

Goals: 3 Kel; 2 Wayno, Greg C.; Singles to Captain Crunch, Munchy, Dasher, Wilkes, Russ and Tails.

Like the Masters game, the Wilston Grange Supers came out with all guns blazing. The usual run out of the midfield that the Rayners Supers side is renowned for, was shut down by a determined Gorillas outfit. They were able to get numbers to the contested ball and weren't afraid to run in numbers out of their back line. Grange came here to play and were able to take a 5 point lead into the main break.

Brandy was superb at centre-half back and assisted by the run of Barra, P.J., Reidy and Cam. Dickers was at his bustling best in the centre while Botters was dangerous operating out of Full Forward on a short leash, kicking 4 goals. Rayners found the run in their legs in the last half and were able to ease away from the gorillas.

Goals: 4 Botters; 2 PJ; Singles to Crazy Richie R., T-Vagg and Shannon.
